All day we wait, but there’s no news. The police still have the suspect in custody, but he has yet to tell them anything useful. It’s bitterly disappointing to get so close and have it come to nothing.

I keep close to Erin, waiting to see if her phone rings, but it doesn’t. She taps away at her computer, her face stoically neutral. If she has any information, she’s not sharing it with us. With me.

“You can ring us at any time if there’s an update,” Deacon says, a bit too cheerfully, as Erin packs up her laptop for the night. “It’s not like we really sleep.”

“Do you need anything?” she asks.

“We just need Lauren,” he says. Lines have formed around his eyes and mouth. He’s ageing before my eyes. I don’t want to think about my own appearance. I’ve barely glanced in a mirror. Getting Lauren back is all that matters now. No matter what the price, we’ll pay it.

Once Erin leaves, the house grows colder, as if an extra person is needed to keep it warm. If Lauren were here, the two of us would huddle under a blanket, watching some crap on TV. She would still demand a bowl of ice-cream, no matter what the weather. I’d let her have it too. I’d let her have anything, if she would just come back.

Suddenly, the house phone trills. I grab it first.

“You’ve got to help me!”

“Julio? What’s going on?”

“There’s a mob outside my house. They’re all chanting and throwing stuff, calling me a paedophile.”

“Christ! Have you rung the police?”

“Five minutes ago.” He’s unable to hide the panic in his voice. “They’re still not here. I’ve locked myself in the bathroom. I don’t know what else to do.”

“Just stay where you are,” I say. “We’re coming to get you.”

“What is it?” Deacon asks. From his excited face, I can tell he thinks it’s Lauren.

“We have to go to Julio’s,” I tell him, setting down the phone. “He’s under attack from a mob.”

His face automatically droops. I understand the pain of dashed hopes, but I need him to get it together.

“We have to help him,” I say.

“I’ll go,” he says, snatching the car keys. “You stay here.”

I think of the sink, and the books scattered around his office. What if Deacon loses it with these people and gets himself in trouble?

“I’m coming too,” I say. “He’s my brother.”

“No,” Deacon says. “Let me handle this.”

I’m not about to let Deacon ‘handle’ anything, but I know there’s little point in arguing.

“I’ll stay in the car,” I promise. “I just want to make sure he’s alright.”

“I’d rather you stayed here,” he says. “What if Lauren comes home?”

“I highly doubt Lauren will be returning this evening,” I say, a little curtly. “And even if she did, they’d take her to the hospital or the police station first. She wouldn’t be allowed to come straight home.”

Deacon presses his lips together, but he can’t force me to stay.

“Come on, let’s go.”
